The holidays can be both joyous and stressful at the same time. Whether we're traveling to be with family that lives out of state, doing your last minute gift buying, or trying to manage a very busy social calendar filled with school performances and work and holiday parties, the holidays have a way of placing increased pressure and stress on most people.
The holiday season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for alcohol-related injuries and deaths, and there are many reasons why:
- With so many parties, there are a lot more people driving drunk during the holidays.
- Many holiday drinkers don't usually drink, so they have a lower alcohol tolerance. These people often underestimate how much alcohol they can handle.
- People with alcoholism drink more frequently.
- The holidays can be very stressful, and people are more inclined to "let loose" at a holiday party to relieve their stress.
More than likely alcohol will be at almost every party you go to this holiday season, and you can ensure that your holidays are relaxing and peaceful if you remember to drink responsibly, and encourage others to do the same. Whether this means drinking in moderation, calling a cab, or arriving to the party with your designated driver, remember, whatever you do, don't drink and drive.
Stay Safe Holiday Tips
The holidays are a time to celebrate with your co-workers, friends, and family. Here are some important tips to stay out of trouble between November 27th and January 1st:
- If you're a guest, be sure to have a plan for a safe way home via a non-drinking designated driver or a taxi. Before arrival, have the number of a taxi service on hand or ask the host if you can sleep over if you have too much to drink.
- If you know someone is trying to drive drunk, be sure to intervene "nicely" before letting that person get behind the wheel. It's a good idea to locate their keys while they are preoccupied and take them away. They will probably think they lost their keys and will be forced to find another mode of transportation.
Remember, the holidays are a time for celebrating with friends and family. If you want to drink, just remember to drink responsibly and never get into a car with someone who you know has been drinking.
