On July 1, 2012, the Kansas legislature carved out an exception under the DUI laws for obtaining a Class C license to operate a motorized bicycle when a driver otherwise is suspended from driving due to a first-time DUI. Restrictions on obtaining this limited driving privilege include commercial DUI's, second or subsequent DUI's, habitual offenders due to alcohol related enforcement contacts within the last five years, and drivers that have not completed mandatory suspension periods. Kansas laws on driving under the influence have become more strict with each passing year, however the legislature has finally offered some relief under certain circumstances for drivers that need to remain productive members of society.
